Serena Williams, 40, wins singles WTA match for the first time in 14 months

23-time Grand Slam champion, former world number one American Serena Williams made it to the second round of the WTA-1000 tournament in Toronto (Canada).

In the first round match, 40-year-old Williams defeated Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (LL) 6-3, 6-4. The meeting lasted 2 hours and 1 minute. Serena filed through seven times, made three double faults and converted three out of five break points. Her opponent has two aces, four double faults and one realized break point out of eight.

In the next round, Serena will face the winner of the match Belinda Bencic (Switzerland, 12) – Teresa Martincova (Q).

Note that for Serena, this is the first victory in singles at the WTA level since June 2021. The American last won at last year’s Roland Garros.

The prize fund of the competition in Toronto was $2,527,250. Its reigning champion is Italian Camila Giorgi.
