Gaël Monfils Withdraws from Shanghai Masters Due to Injury

French tennis veteran Gaël Monfils, currently ranked World No. 53, has withdrawn from the upcoming Shanghai Masters after suffering an ankle injury.

The 39-year-old sustained the injury during his first-round match at the ATP 250 event in Chengdu, where he faced Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko. Monfils was forced to retire while leading 1–0 in the third set after splitting the opening two: 6–7 (3–7), 6–3.

Monfils’ place in the Shanghai main draw will be taken by Australian player Christopher O’Connell.

About the Tournament

  • The Shanghai Masters will run from October 1 to 12, 2025.

  • The defending champion is Jannik Sinner, who defeated Novak Djokovic in last year’s final, 7–6, 6–3.
